New to CrossFit?
Intro Course |
All great things are built on a solid foundation. Your fitness journey at CrossFit Avon begins with a Fundamentals course. This can be done in a small group (up to 6 people) over two 3 hour sessions (cost £50) or if you prefer we can deliver it in one-to-one Personal Training sessions (three 1 hour sessions, costing £144).
You’ll be taught the proper techniques for the movements we use and the corrective cues to improve your positions. You'll be given nutrition guidance, recovery tips and be prepared for joining our Group Classes. The Fundamentals programme is great fun and you’ll learn loads. Answer to question 0
do i have to be fit to start crossfit?
No! This is one of the biggest myths about CrossFit. Our coaches are highly skilled in teaching the movements at a pace that suits each individual. Once you've completed your Fundamentals, our classes are also suitable for anyone. All of the movements in our classes are scaleable to suit your level. Although you can expect to work hard and feel uncomfortable at times during our sessions you will never be asked to do anything that is not within your current ability.
How do i join?
If you would like to join us please fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page or on the Home page. Once completed we will be in touch to answer any questions you might have, then book your Fundamentals sessions with you.
I'VE BEEN GOING TO A REGULAR GYM FOR YEARS, DO I STILL NEED TO DO THE FUNDAMENTALS SESSIONS?
Yes. Although you may find you have done some of the movements before at a normal gym we will be teaching you the specific cues we use to get you to move with good form. We will want to assess and address any mobility and movement issues you have. We will also teach you many of the scaling options for the movements.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A CROSSFIT CLASS?
Please wear comfortable gym clothes and trainers. We also have a tops on policy during our classes. Although we have water fountains please also bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated during your class.
how do i book a class?
If you've completed your Fundamentals Programme and have purchased one of our memberships you will be able to book in to any classes via the TeamUp app on your smartphone or via the website on the Booking page.
how do i cancel my membership?
If you are thinking about leaving us you will need to give at least 28 days notice before billing date to cancel your membership. Please email us to let us know..
CAN I SUSPEND MY MEMBERSHIP?
Yes. However, you will need to give us 28 days notice to suspend. We will require a return date for your membership to start again. Your return date can be changed during your suspended time if your circumstances change. Email us if you're thinking of doing this.
how do i upgrade or downgrade my membership?
Please email us if you would like to upgrade or downgrade your membership. We normally arrange this so that your next payment will be at the new rate.
I can't make a class i have booked, what should i do?
Even if it last minute, please cancel your class on the website or the Booking page on our website. This allows other people to potentially take your place. Classes cancelled within 24 hours of the class will be counted as a 'Late Cancel' and will count as one of your monthly sessions.
what happens if i late cancel a class?
We have a 24 hours cancellation period for all of our classes
If you cancel a class within 24 hours of the class it is deemed a 'Late Cancel'. Unfortunately, this will count as one of your sessions for your billing period.

how does the waitlist work?
When a class is full you will have the option of going on the waitlist.
If a space becomes available MORE THAN 24 hours before the class, and you are on the waitlist, you will be automatically added to the class and a confirmation email will be sent confirming this.
If a space becomes available LESS THAN 24 hours before the class, you will receive an email if first on the waitlist. You then have 45 minutes to accept the space before it is offered to the next person on the waitlist. It is worth keeping an eye on the app if you are keen to come to a particular class as spaces often open up on the day.

Which programme should i follow?
All new members and most of our existing members follow the Fitness Programme. About 10% of our members follow the Performance Programme.
The Fitness Programme is designed to develop amazing fitness, health and wellbeing using CrossFit. The programme is constantly varied and allows for suitable scaling to encompass the full range of abilities of our members.
The Performance Programme is for those who want to start competing at the sport of CrossFit and therefore need to be good at CrossFit. This is a very different demand to simply wanting to get really fit and healthy. If you are interested you will need to have achieved everything at Level 3 on our Athletic Levels. Please then speak to the Head Coach to confirm your suitability for the programme.

i do other training as well as crossfit, how should i combine them?
Our programme is constantly varied and will help you to improve every aspect of your fitness. If you are training with us 2+ times per week you will see noticeable improvements to your fitness. However we appreciate that many people play competitive sport away from the gym, participate in other events such as Running and Obstacle Course races and some more advanced athletes want to work on certain aspects of their fitness.
We do not release our programme in advance. For those who do strength work in addition to our classes we do release what movements are programmed for strength a week in advance so you can plan your training accordingly. Our advice is to always leave enough time for your body to rest and recover between sessions. Please speak to the Head Coach if you have any concerns about your training or want some advice on extra training as every situation is different.

I can't do certain movements due to injury, can i come to a class?
Yes! Our coaches are trained to modify movements to allow you to train with a minor injury. Please talk to your coach at the beginning of a class about this. If you have a more serious injury please speak to the Head Coach about your training and suitability for classes.
If you are injured we have a recommended Physiotherapist who sends us details of your rehab programme to make it easier for us to modify appropriately for you.
Our recommended Physiotherapist is:

what happens if i am late for a class?
If you are late and the class has already finished the warm up then unfortunately you won't be able to participate in the class. Our warm ups are tailored to the specific daily programme and you could easily have missed something important. You will be welcome to come to a later class.
can i find out what the programme is before the class?
No. This is the only way to ensure you experience constant variance in your training. We do however release limited details of the Strength section of a WOD a week in advance on our Facebook page for those who do additional strength training away from CrossFit Avon.
can i come to the olympic weightlifting classes?
Yes, if you have achieved Level 1 on our Athletic Levels for Weightlifting.
We would encourage as many people as possible to learn the Olympic Lifts, they are fantastic for developing strength, coordination, power and mobility. However, it is important that you have reached a certain standard in your core lifts; Overhead Squat, Front Squat and Shoulder Press with good mobility in all of those movements before learning the more complicated Olympic Lifting Movements.

what happens in open sessions?
We run two different Open Sessions. You must book in to a session on the Booking System before attending.
Uncoached Open Sessions:
This is time when the gym is open for you to use the equipment and work on any aspect of your fitness. There will not be a coach available for help or advice. Note that during this time you should not do any movements that require spotting (Back Squat, Bench Press) without someone spotting you or without the safety arms. Many use this time to work on weaknesses that they have identified from the Athletic Levels.
Coached Open Sessions:
During these sessions a coach will be available to offer coaching, advice and guidance on any aspect of your fitness. This is a great time to work on some the more advanced gymnastic movements such as Kipping Pull Ups and Muscle Ups with help of a coach.

what does level 0, level 1 etc mean on the programme?
The Levels refer to our Athletic Levels document which can be downloaded on our website but is also available in the Athlete Handbook which should have been sent to you when you joined us. Please request a copy if you don't have one.
do i need to record my workouts?
Yes! Recording your workouts in a training diary or notebook is a very important aspect of CrossFit. Everything you do in our gym is measurable and repeatable and therefore recordable. We want you to make progress in your health and fitness and recording your results is a big part of that.
Recording both your strength numbers and your metcon scaling and results is the only way to track progress and to ensure you are using the correct weights and movements in subsequent classes. You will not make the most out of our classes without recording your results.
